This unique academic and practice based program is built upon the Professional Standards for School Business Management as established by the Association of School Business Officials International. Therefore, each class is unique to the field of school business management. Included in the program is a three semester internship overseen by practicing school business officials already serving in Illinois schools. This ensures that every student will exit the program with the breadth and depth of experience that is required to be successful in this growing educational leadership field.
Also, due to this unique partnership, students enrolled in these programs will automatically become members of Illinois ASBO and receive all of the benefits afforded practicing school business officials in Illinois.
School Business Management is a career opportunity in education. If offers good pay and excellent benefits, mobility, excellent working conditions, a wide variety of challenges and personal satisfaction. It is a career open to all who are willing to:
- Academically prepare themselves
- Get properly certified by the State of Illinois
- Get the experience required.
School Business Officials are top level administrators in the agency they serve, whether it is a public or private school, community college or university. In most districts and colleges, school business officials are the second highest administrator reporting directly to the superintendent or board president. This program prepares individuals willing to acquire those skills needed in the areas of budgeting, reporting, planning, evaluating, staffing, negotiating, coordinating, communicating and much more.
This 39-semester-hour program is intended to prepare persons to serve as school business managers. Students, under the direction of an advisor, will plan a program of studies which will include course work, internship and field experiences directly related to the school business management functions in elementary, secondary or college educational systems.
It is not necessary to have a teaching certificate to apply for this program. A student who completes the Master's of Science in Education degree in School Business Management will satisfy the educational requirements for the Chief School Business Official endorsement to the Type 75 Illinois Administrative Certificate. Program flexibility permits elective courses which may be applied toward meeting minimal educational requirements for the general administrative endorsement.
